Amusement Parks
Wildlife exploration, roller coasters, and children’s themes
Families today can choose from a wide selection of amusement parks, all designed for both kids and adults to enjoy. Here are some of the top parks to consider for your family travel.
Six Flags started as a single park in the 1960s and now has more than two dozen locations. Known for great roller coasters, the parks have grown to feature water parks and some feature top marine mammal attractions, such as killer whale shows and walk-through aquariums. The parks also feature popular Warner Brother’s characters such as Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck. In 2007, Six Flags introduced Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends into its parks in Vallejo (near San Francisco) and New England (near Boston). Six Flags Fiesta Texas, in San Antonio, has been consistently recognized for its great shows, which include street performers, music, concerts, and a one-of-a-kind parade.
Sesame Place, the nation’s only theme park based on the award-winning television show Sesame Street®, is located 30 minutes north of Philadelphia and 90 minutes south of New York City. This park has fantastic family rides for children ages 2 to 13. Race into space on Elmo’s World, travel around the globe on Grover’s World Twirl or splash like a rubber ducky on Ernie’s Waterworks. You can also dine with favorite characters such as Big Bird and enjoy interactive play experiences.
Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida is a one-of-a-kind, tropical compound of pools, rivers and beaches. Only 1,000 people can enter the park daily, giving guests a surprisingly calm way to enjoy activities like snorkeling a well-populated, colorful coral reef, floating down a river, and bird-petting and feeding for the kids. The most popular activity, though, is swimming with dolphins. Guests learn simple hand signals for communications, then get 30 minutes with a pod of bottlenose dolphins in a pool. Every package includes a continental breakfast, lunch, plus all snacks and beverages throughout the day. Packages are costly, however a seven-day pass to SeaWorld is also included in the ticket price.
Legoland is located between San Diego and Anaheim in Carlsbad, California. Legoland is specifically designed for children ages 3 through 12 “and their parents”. The top attractions are all made completely of Legos, including a life-sized gorilla and an Egyptian-style pharaoh enshrined in a 30 million block Lego tomb. For slightly older kids, the Aquazone Wave Racers is a life-sized water ride that looks just like the scenes by the same name you may have cobbled together at home.
Legoland is great around holidays when they have special attractions. Legoland discounts are widely available online and through Costco, look for a good deal before heading to the park. In San Diego, definitely also plan to visit their world-class zoo and other great theme parks, such as Sea World.
Try to visit these amusement parks outside of the summer months or weekdays during the summer, and try to eat at non-popular meal times.
